President
Tony Fairless

Tony Fairless is a native of Cumbria who joined the Royal Navy after leaving school and served for 13 years, 2 years of which was spent aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia and 5 years on submarines. He left as a Petty Officer Radio Electrician at the age of 30 and then joined the Cumbrian Constabulary. In 1979 Tony moved to Devon & Cornwall Constabulary to build up a Technical Training Wing. He retired in 1997 as the Superintendent in charge of Operational Support. Tony was previously a member of Otter Valley Rotary Club where he’d held the post of Vice-President. Tony lives with his wife Sandra in St Johns and assures us that he is keen to become very much involved in our activities, and is looking forward to serving the local community.


1st Vice President
Paul Edwards

Paul Edwards joined the Club in 2006. As a teenager he lived in Kingsbridge, Devon and moved to Cornwall in 1966. Paul worked in the Midland Bank in Cornwall for 5 years and then trained to become a teacher, graduating in 1975. Alas there were no suitable teaching jobs in Cornwall in 1975, so he started teaching in Worcestershire and Gloucestershire. After 3 years of teaching, Paul, with his wife Marjorie, went into the pub and restaurant trade for 13 years, during which time he became a member of the Rotary Club of Oswestry. Paul returned to teaching in1991, and 10 years later, obtained a post working for a national Teaching Association covering Cornwall and Plymouth. His interests are motor sport, amateur radio and anything steam-operated (except ironing!)

2nd Vice President
David Hutchinson

David Hutchinson was born in London and joined the Royal Navy from school. After several years flying helicopters and instructing others, he moved on to the North Sea working for Shell Exploration, based offshore flying inter rig and SAR. Seeking a career change with more stability, he bought a Fish & Chip Shop in Truro, moving after 5 years to Helston, having bought the well established ‘Jenkins’ in Meneage Street. David and Coleen remained in Meneage Street for nearly 20 years before selling the business in 2005. They have one son who works in London as a detective on Operation Trident. He now works part time for the Seafish Industry Authority as a peripatetic Training Assessor and Quality Award Inspector, both roles specifically dealing with the Fish & Chip sector, and covering Devon and Cornwall. David is relatively new to Rotary, but is keen to do whatever he can to help with Community projects.



Hon Secretary
Vince Grispo

Vince Grispo joined Helston Rotary Club in 1973 and became President in 1980. After leaving school at 16, with a School Certificate, he took an entrance exam and was accepted as a “Youth-in-training” at the Post Office Engineering Research Station at Dollis Hill, in North London. At evening classes, he studied electrical engineering at Paddington Tech. and electronics at Hendon Tech. and eventually qualified as an electronics engineer. After National Service in the Royal Navy, he was recruited by the engineering branch of the Security Service and spent some years constructing and installing listening devices at home and abroad. In the early sixties, with a physicist friend, he co-founded an engineering company, devoted to the manufacture of micromanipulators, and brought it to Cornwall in 1970. Vince sold his interest in the company (which has become the world leader in the production of instrumentation in the field of assisted human fertilization) in 1999. Since the death of his wife, June, in 2004, Vince lives on his own but makes regular contact with his family in London, enjoys the company of his friends (in and not in Rotary) and runs the maintenance side of a commercial buildings letting business in Penryn

Hon Treasurer
John Eddy

John was born in Helston and is a member of an old Helston family. Educated at schools in Helston and Falmouth, after he had completed a business course at Falmouth College in 1958 he joined the family retail firm of Eddy & Son (Helston) Ltd., which was established by his great, great grandfather in 1862.
John married is wife Nanette in 1965, they have two sons and two grand children. Richard their eldest lives in Warwick, where he is a director of a computer games company. Their other son Charles lives in Reigate with his wife Beth and their daughters Amelia and Clara. Charles works in London as a marketing accounts manager. John and Nanette now both retired enjoy visiting their family or spending their time together boating or walking around the wonderful coastline of Cornwall. They also both like to assist with the work of the renal unit at Treliske Hospital following John’s live kidney transplant donated to him by Nanette.
Being a Helstonian, John is proud to now be the Chairman of the Flora Day Dance Stewards, having been first made a Steward in 1974. John joined Helston Rotary Club in 1993 and was President in 2001/02, he has served on all the committees of the Club and has been deputy to both the Hon. Treasurer and Hon. Secretary.

Mick Timpson

A former naval serviceman and garage owner, Mick has been a member of Helston Rotary since 2003. He joined the Royal Navy in 1963 aged 15 and spent a total of 24 years in the service - the majority of that time as an aircraft armourer and later as a weapons electrical artificer. On leaving the navy in 1987, he set up in business as a self-employed auto electrician, operating from Bullock Lane Garage in Monument Road. He gave up the vehicle electrical trade in 2005 and now works for Kerrier District Council. Mick, who has lived in Helston several times during his naval career, but continuously since 1981, is married to Kay, a Teaching Assistant at Parc Eglos School. They have three children - Ben who graduated from the University of Warwick, Callum, who is in his first year of 'A' levels and Eleanor who is in year eight at Helston Community College. Mick was Chairman of Parc Eglos School PTA from 1994 to 1999, when he started the popular Helston Motor Show. He is also a governor of Parc Eglos School, the Chairman of Helston PACT and Vice-Chairman of the Fleet Air Arm Armourers Association.


Sports
Mike Potts

After leaving the local grammar school in 1956 Mike joined the Metropolitan Police as a cadet, becoming a constable in 1958. Mike served in the East End of London until 1972 when he transferred to Merseyside Police where he was a Traffic Patrol Officer until retiring in 1986. He joined Sefton Council Trading Standards Department as an Investigations Officer with responsibility for the Sefton car dealers under the Sale of Goods, Pricing and Trade Description legislation and other various duties. From 1979 until 1999 Mike ran his own driving school until he moved to Cornwall where his occupation changed to his present one of Motor Accident Insurance Claims Inspector dealing with several insurance companies. Mike joined Helston Rotary in November 2004 and is looking forward to organising sports and fellowship events for the club having spent two years on Youth Opportunities Committee.

Alan Bradley

Alan Bradley is a Helstonian and as such is very proud to be associated with the famous Helston Flora Dance and is a member of the organising committee. He joined Rotary having previously been a member of Helston Round Table, and has held various posts in the Rotary club, including President. Having recently retired from his post as Station Manager at the Goonhilly Satellite Earth Station, he now looks forward to finding new interests, and spending more time enjoying his hobbies which include sailing and walking.
